PLEASE NOTE: Only applications that are requesting training courses that will be completed BEFORE March 16, 2017 will be processed at this time.  If you still wish to submit applications requesting training courses that have completion dates AFTER March 15, 2017, we will hold your application in queue should funding become available. If you choose to submit an application you should be aware of the following:

  • There is no guarantee that funding will be available for your application for training courses that complete AFTER March 15, 2017.
  • If you choose to proceed with your training course after your application has been received by the program area, and no additional funding becomes available prior to February 1, 2018, your application will not be approved and expenses incurred for your training course(s) will NOT be eligible for Growing Forward 2. Should Growing Forward 2 be renewed in 2018, any training courses partially or fully completed will NOT qualify for the new funding program.
  • The Program Terms and Conditions and Application Form have been updated. Please review them prior to submitting your application as changes have been made to Eligible Applicants, Eligible Activities, and many other sections.
  • You must use the new Application forms if submitting an application April 4, 2016 or after.
  • You must submit your application prior to starting the courses/programs listed in it.
  • Projects must be completed by February 1, 2018.
  • Applications will only be accepted by mail.

Program purpose statement

The purpose of this program is to help Albertas new or established producers, agri-processing companies and agricultural organizations improve their business management skills, enhancing the industry’s competitiveness and sustainability.

Program description

Under the Growing Forward 2 Business Management Skills Development Program, successful applicants are eligible for reimbursement for 75% of eligible costs for approved business skills development training courses.

  • Established agriculture producers, new producers, agri-processing industry staff and producer groups will be reimbursed for 75% of tuition fees or the cost to hire an instructor for a group skill training course.
  • Maximum payments: Individuals can apply for multiple projects to a maximum of $10,000 per individual for the life of the program. Groups can apply for multiple projects to a maximum of $20,000 per application and a maximum of $40,000 for the life of the program.

Am I eligible for this program?

The following groups are eligible to apply for funding:

  • Producers in Alberta who have an established primary business in the production of crops or livestock.
  • Agri-food processors with an established business in Alberta, including owners and senior managers.
  • New entrants into Alberta’s agriculture and agri-food industry who will have a primary business in production of crops or livestock, or a processing business.
  • Senior managers, executive directors or directors on a board that represents an agricultural organizations or processor.
  • Agricultural organizations seeking training for their organization or board members.

How do I apply for this program?

  1. Determine whether you are eligible - Refer to the Business Management Skills Development Program’s Terms and Conditions.
  2. Ensure that the project activities are eligible - Eligible activities are listed in the program’s Terms and Conditions.
  3. Select the appropriate Application Form – Individual primary producers and individual New Entrants select the Individual Applicants application. If you are an executive director or a director on the board of directors of an agricultural organizations or processor; or an owner or senior manager of an agricultural organizations or processor industry, select the Group Applicants application. If you are an agricultural organizations or processor applying for training for a group of their board members, select the Group Applicants application.
  4. Complete the Application Form - Applications should include a learning plan, noting learning outcomes and documented costs, before funds can be approved.
  5. You must submit your application prior to starting the courses/programs listed in it.
  6. Once completed, send your application and supporting documents by mail to:
