International Market Development and Investment Attraction


The International Market Development and Investment Attraction Initiatives are designed to provide analysis and use specific market intelligence to monitor trends, design and implement market development strategies, build in-market relationships, develop in-market expertise, support advocacy, assist with market entry and troubleshooting, monitor market access and facilitate investment attraction, improve industry competitiveness and positioning. The programs will help develop a solid understanding of foreign buyers’ needs and preferences, promote the utilization of the Canada Brand and position Canada as a preferred supplier of choice. The programs will also help the agriculture and agri-food sector’s small and medium sized enterprises attract domestic and international investment. The initiatives will also assist with attracting new firms to address specific gaps in the agriculture and agri-food sector.

Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development may lead and/or collaborate with the federal government, provincial governments, and/or industry stakeholders on international market development and investment attraction projects and initiatives.

Initiative Descriptions

International Market Development Initiatives will provide custom intelligence, facilitate opportunity identification and matchmaking introductions, implement market development strategies, develop relationships with strategic influencers and advance advocacy and market access priorities that complement federal efforts where possible. Such initiatives are designed to help companies improve their competitiveness and positioning, prepare marketing strategies, target strategic channels and connect to market opportunities.

Activities may include: trade development and market advocacy missions, networking events, trade shows, tabletops, exploratory market visits, custom intelligence, product showcase, export readiness seminars, industry coaching, media promotions, branding seminars, trade promotions.

Investment Attraction Initiatives will help the sector’s small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) attract domestic and international investment and will help attract new firms to address specific gaps in the sector; more broadly, these initiatives will promote Canada and/or Alberta as a reliable, safe and profitable locations for agriculture and agri-food investment.

Activities may include: research to identify Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) target firms; undertaking outgoing investment missions; supporting incoming investor missions; developing marketing materials for potential investors; and supporting small and medium sized enterprise participation in select investment attraction events, such as Venture Capital (VC) boot camps.
